Em um pequeno recanto da Europa os passageiros de um trem ficam retidos em virtude de uma nevasca e são obrigados a pernoitar em uma pequena estalagem. Lá uma rica jovem conhece uma velha governanta e ambas combinam de se encontrarem no dia seguinte no trem. Entretanto, logo após o início da viagem a governanta desaparece e ninguém, por motivos diversos, afirma ter visto a pessoa desaparecida. Ela persiste em suas investigações e acaba convencendo um musicólogo, com quem ela tinha se desentendido na véspera.
