Um italiano é atraído para o partido fascista quando é instruído a assassinar seu antigo professor universitário, um antifascista vocal exilado na França durante os anos 30. Baseado no romance homônimo de 1951, de Alberto Moravia.

Paronzini aos 50 anos, decide se casar e ele acha as três irmãs Tettamanzi. Emerenziano (Ugo Tognazzi) é o inspetor de impostos de meia idade que está em busca de uma esposa rica. Ele viaja para o norte da Itália, onde conhece três irmãs, que, apesar de ricas, não são tão jovens ou lindas. Ele decide casar com uma delas e então leva as outras duas como amantes. As irmãs virgens são lentamente transformadas em pessoas vorazes, cada uma possuindo seus próprios talentos sexuais individuais. Tudo parece estar bem para ele até encontrar uma jovem garçonete com quem ele se enreda e, como resultado, se torna um prisioneiro indefeso submetido aos caprichos das fêmeas famintas do amor. The Lagno is the canal that crosses Naples, collecting its debris to stop even before reaching the sea. Around its dirty waters, the film outlines a cross-section that is anything but oleographic of the Neapolitan capital, immortalized already in the advanced industrial era and still wearing the signs of war and desperate poverty. After a few spoken notes, the sound commentary is entirely inhabited by a ghostly composition.

In Montesano, Salento, during the festivities held in August in honour of Saint Donatus, patron saint of epileptics and the mentally ill, the power of collective suggestion causes strange phenomena and rituals to occur. Luigi Di Gianni, master of anthropological documentary, films the worshippers with Dionysian force as they writhe and scream as if in a pagan rite, showing how the content of the Catholic liturgy succumbs to the primitive passion of popular religiosity.
