Illa de Arousa, 1971. Maria is a woman who earns her living by seafood. She is also known on the island for helping other women in childbirth with special dedication and care. After an unexpected event, she is forced to flee and begins a dangerous journey that will make her fight for her survival. Seeking her freedom, Maria decides to cross the border by one of the smuggling routes between Galicia and Portugal.
1492. Among the crew led by Christopher Columbus travel three men who by now should have been dead. They managed to avoid their sad fate by participating in this uncertain journey. After reaching the Canary Islands they flee taking with them one of the ship's sails. Meanwhile, in the "Old World", a woman tries to save her dying sister by taking her to a healer. O filme transcorre nas sombras do regime de Franco, com um roteiro baseado em textos de diversos escritores espanhóis e um enredo desencadeado pelo retorno do misterioso Anxo (interpretado por Misha Bies Golas) à sua aldeia após desaparecer durante a Guerra Civil Espanhola. As pessoas ao seu redor descrevem aquela época, suas memórias e suas vidas ulteriores com a escolha entre submissão e resistência ecoando nas palavras de cada orador. A cinematografia de Mauro Herce transmite a luz e força de espíritos individuais enquanto a escuridão paira sobre suas cabeças.
