Biasutti and Perbellini have the same name, Fausto, and they both hate life in the big city. They meet by chance during a trip for amateur photographers, become friends and begin to cultivate together the dream of going to live in the countryside, keeping with the fruit of their efforts. When Biasutti inherits his grandmother’s old house in Valvana, in the hills of the north east, the dream can finally become reality: the welcome in the village, however, proves less warm than expected.

Ulisse, Fulvio and Domenico decide to rent an apartment together in order to live with their modest work. Accio and Manrico are two working-class brothers in 1960s Italy: older Manrico is handsome, charismatic, womanizing, and loved by all, while younger Accio is moody, hotheaded, and lives everything as if it was a war, much to his parents' chagrin. When the former is drawn into left-wing politics, Accio joins the fascists out of spite. His flimsy beliefs are put to test when he meets Manrico's like-minded girlfriend, falling in love with her.

Após saber que o Estado pretende privatizar o colégio em que estudam, um grupo de estudantes decide entrar em greve e ocupá-lo, enfrentando a polícia. Entre eles está Silvio (Silvio Muccino), que está mais interessado em garotas do que nos comitês de política estudantil.
