Yippee Ki-Yay Merry Christmas: A Die Hard Musical Parody debuted November 29, 2014 at MCL Chicago, a storefront theatre founded in July of the same year by Stephanie McCullough, Michael Shepherd Jordan, and Alex Garday to celebrate the art of music comedy, blending their shared experiences in improv, musical improv, and musical theater. In late September, only having been open three months, the founders realized they needed a show for the Fall/Winter season. Acting volunteer secretary at the time, Alex Richmond, mentioned that her family watched Die Hard every holiday season and the C4 was set, so to speak. The founders quickly went to work parodying the beloved 80s action movie turning it into the hilarious musical audiences know and love today.

I Put a Spell on You was created by and stars Johnson. The annual show is a spoof of and tribute to the beloved cult classic movie Hocus Pocus. This year’s COVID-safe digital film is not your average stream: it’s complete with larger-than-life performances and choreography, over-the-top costumes and makeup, unmatched production value and a healthy dose of Broadway magic. Whit defenders and detractors, the whole country talks about Leonardo Oviedo, and he will be willing to get to the very end, to fulfill this sickening artistic ideal.

The action is set in Naples, opening a door onto an imagined maritime world stretching towards the Orient. Faced with two authoritarian fathers, two sons, both of whom are thwarted lovers, turn to the crafty Scapin, who is driven by a mad desire for revenge. The character is a double of Scaramouche, the Italian actor of the adventurous life whom Molière admired: “to tell you the truth, there are few things that are impossible for me, when I put my mind to them” declares the buffoonish servant whose name, as Denis Podalydès points out, derives his from the Italian scappare which means “to escape”, “to scamper off”. Scapin is beaten with a stick at one point but also gets his own back and, against a background of ransom demands and paternal contradictions, he comes up with an avalanche of stratagems and other tricks, which Molière excels in depicting.
