Postwoman Mrs Skorepa, her husband the ambulance driver Mr Skorepa and their eleven-year-old twins Petr and Pavel live in Prague in Malá Strana (Lesser Town), one of the Prague's historical and oldest quarters. The boys are crazy about cars and everything linked to them. They don't share their father's love of classical music. On the other hand, they are crazy about the newly announced scrap yard competition for paper collection. The lottery tickets awarded for every ten kilograms of old paper collected could win them a go-kart.

After returning home from the army, Vasek (Ladislav Potmesil) has married Bozka (Eva Trejtnarová) and the couple now live at her parents' house. Vasek is unhappy both with his work and with sharing the house with Bozka's parents. He and his friend Ruda (Oldrich Vlach) decide to take a temporary job in Ostrava for a year. Bozka is against this, but Vasek gets his way. Mining is hard work but Vasek gradually adapts to it. He gets homesick from time to time and wants to go back, but his pride always wins out. Once he really does travel back to see Bozka, but he doesn't find her at home.
This film, chronicling the last days of Czech resistance fighter Maruska Kuderikova (played by Magda Vasaryova), is based on her diaries. Though she was tortured and eventually executed by the Nazis, her diaries indicate that she was optimistic for the humanity of her captors and did not by any means hate them. Told with simple dignity, this film makes clear why Maruska became a national hero.

Michal's father and his friends are stigmatized by their war experience and the post-war social deformations in which they took part either directly, or watched them cowardly and in silence. They are trying to repress their feelings of guilt and justify their behavior to the young generation with memories of their heroic war feats. Michal, however, does not want to have anything to do with their problems. He subconsciously perceives the unpleasant atmosphere in the family as well as his father's hypocrisy. After one of many quarrels with his father, he runs away from home, determined to go his own way.

В центре фильма — история семейной династии, связанной с пражским «Колбенко», заводом ЧКД по производству локомотивов. Дедушка Антонин, уже пенсионер, сын Рудольф, мастер цеха сборки локомотивов, и внук Антонин, перспективный футболист. В фильме также рассказывается история дочери Рудольфа Веры — каждое поколение имеет свои представления о жизни и не может идентифицировать себя с другими. Это реалистическая концепция жизни рабочего класса, не обремененная идеологией.

Гордый собственным достоинством и стремлением поднять престиж сельскохозяйственного кооператива, Лойза подсмеивается над теми, кто плохо разбирается в сельском хозяйстве, и стыдит тех, кто еще не вступил в кооператив. Но, присмотревшись к Лойзе, председатель понимает, что ошибся. Лойза изобретателен, энергичен, трудолюбив и пользуется авторитетом у молодежи. Председатель назначает Лойзу бригадиром молодежной бригады, занятой осушением болот.

Действие фильма происходит в одном из сельскохозяйственных кооперативов Чехословакии. Енда, Элишка, Ирка, Анча и другие члены Союза молодежи возмущаются тем, что их родители, в силу укоренившихся частнособственнических пережитков, по мелочам расхищают кооперативное имущество. Ребята решают прекратить подобное безобразие. Так как никакие доводы на взрослых не действуют, ребята составляют списки на своих родителей, в которых перечисляют все то, что те взяли из кооператива. Взрослые возмущаются — «как могут эти ябедники позорить своих отцов». Но на очередном собрании ребята сообщили, что за последнее время члены кооператива растащили имущества более чем на 20 тысяч крон...
Действие фильма происходит в Праге в 1942 году. Павел, молодой судент, прячет на чердаке своего дома еврейскую девушку, скрывающуюся от фашистов. Несмотря на все ужасы немецкой оккупации, между молодыми людьми возникает любовь, но их отношения заканчиваются трагедией. Павел - единственная ниточка, связываюшая девушку с внешним миром. Мать Павла узнает об их отношениях и принуждает обитателей дома принять решение: может ли девушка дальше скрываться в своём убежище…
