A lonely researcher doubting his own existence builds an android which looks exactly like himself.
A trans woman works and lives in Tokyo with colleagues who understand her, but there remains an underlying lack of confidence and feeling of unfulfillment. She makes the decision to contact an old classmate from her high school days when returning home on a business trip, hoping that they will see her for the person she is now.
Masao (Kokone Sasaki) was once famous for having supernatural powers, but she now lives as a prostitute. Her special power is to know when a person will die by touching them. Masao has sex with men about to die. One day, a man named Tachibana (Shima Ohnishi) appears in front of her and expresses his wish to film her. In reality, Tachibana wants to take revenge on her. His wife killed herself after learning from Masao that she would die. Tachibana though becomes attracted to Masao.
Naoko returns home with her young daughter, where her mother Masako runs the only beauty parlor in town. The local women go there to pass the time lamenting their bad luck with men and laughing over dirty jokes. Unbeknownst to them, Naoko has been secretly seeing her former teacher, Kashima.

A few years ago, when Tomomi (Hiroko Akune) was on the way home from school, she saw her friend Keiko (Misaki Mori) about to be raped by a man. Tomomi hit the man in the head with a stone and saved Keiko. In the present, Keiko, has buried her past, sells her body in Tokyo. One day, Keiko is contacted by Tomomi. They haven't spoken since their high school graduation. They meet and Keiko lets Tomomi stay at her apartment. Soon, the bizarre lives of the two women begins, with Tomomi also selling her body.

Nakata (Keiichiro Akagi) is a nihilistic young buck who is willing to do anything to get money in his pockets. As he knocks back a couple drinks that he knows he won't be able to afford, a former marksman-turned-bad, Ishioka approaches him. Ishioka is looking for an unaffiliated hit-man who is willing to handle some business. Nakata is just the right man for the job.

Kurosawa's final credit as a screenwriter was removed from initial release due to various rewrites.
