Конец 1944 года. Советская армия уверенно движется по территории Польши, и в узниках концентрационных лагерей, расположенных в этой стране, вспыхивает надежда. Однако в преддверие краха нацисты усиливают репрессии. И вот уже старейший заключенный лагеря, немецкий коммунист Карл Шонгауэр, арестованный сразу после прихода к власти Гитлера и сумевший перенести 10-летнее заключение, приговорен комендантом Шеллером к смерти. Но лощеный эсэсовец не хочет просто так казнить своего уникального узника. Он заключает пари со своим заместителем, что немецкая кровь обязательно возьмет свое. А потому объявляет, что в утро казни один из приговоренных получит помилование, если убьет своего собрата по несчастью. Вторым узником загона для смертников становится французский еврей Давид Штейн, которому обещана жизнь, если он сумеет убить немца.
