Circumstances force the unstructured yet charming Danish Bohemian novelist, Simon, to share his flat in Copenhagen with the very organized and beautiful Swedish lawyer, Malou. Simon dreams of children and a family. Malou is solely focused on her career. Despite being in opposition they warm up to each other. But even though opposites do attract - can they also manage to live together? Against all odds their meeting sets of a chain of events, which will ultimately change their lives forever.

The film follows a day in the life of a troubled elderly gentleman facing fear of death and visions of his late father who he gets mixed up with his favorite figure of fiction, Captain Ahab from Moby Dick. He has visions of rubber shoes in the sewer where he works leading him to think back on his childhood and the origins of his bizarre work of art for which he has sacrificed even his marriage. His masterpiece is a bizarre fence along a black beach which he tends to with tenderness but dreads to complete.

When his own father dies, Philip suddenly realises the pain of having been abandoned years ago. Enter Karl, a charming old rogue who claims to have been a close friend of Philip's dad. Philip invites Karl to stay at his house, where Karl quickly becomes a surrogate father-figure for both Philip and his son. But just as Philip's mind starts to open, the truth about Karl threatens to emerge, and soon both men are in for big surprises in this heartwarming, bittersweet comedy about a man's struggle to make peace with his dead father.

Very little throws him off his stride, whether it is his girlfriend's jealousy of his friendship with Charly, a reform-school boy, or his mother's drunken, playful amorousness one night, because he reminds her of his father.
