Профессор Людовико Бруски - пожилой коммунист, желающий жить в аккуратном и социально справедливом государстве. Но беспорядок вот-вот нарушит размеренное течение его жизни, прежде всего из-за его внучки Папери, а потом и из-за матери Папери Стеллы, подруги его сына. Отношения между Оливьеро, сыном Бруски, и Стеллой закончились, вероятно, из-за того, что возлюбленные были очень молоды. Теперь Профессор Бруски обязан достигнуть соглашения с мрачной, необразованной, обиженной Стеллой, голова которой полна ложных и разрушительных идей, и которая мешает его повседневной жизни. Профессор теряет терпение, и Стелла уезжает. Он ищет ее и находит в больнице со сломанной ногой. Они становятся ближе, а затем беззаветно влюбляются друг в друга. Нога Стеллы заживает, и она уходит искать новые отношения, новые эмоции, а профессор начинает ждать её возвращения: и всё это происходит в присутствии Папери, слишком молодой, чтобы понять.

Carlo, a police officer, after intercepting a call conducts a drug bust at a private party at the upper class apartment of Rosanna Clerici and she is arrested. Just as the police and party guests are leaving, Giulio, Rosanna's six-year-old son, comes out of his room and asks Carlo where his mother is. Seeing that Carlo is the person responsible for his mother's arrest, Giulio tags along with him until his mother is freed. Carlo does everything possible to have Social Services or somebody look after the kid but is told by the Courts that he is the best candidate for his custody until a better one is found. Even though Giulio manages to turn Carlo's life inside out he ends up getting to like the kid and falling for the kid's mother, Rosanna, while she is in prison. It ends with Rosanna being released from prison and the three of them going out for dinner.

Before finally entering the afterlife, the dead spend a period in a limbo from which they depart only when, among the living, there is no one who remembers them. Under the care of the salacious Domenico the visitors of a small cemetery recount how they arrived at eternal peace.
