Fue visto por última vez con vida a 245 metros de la cumbre del Everest, minutos antes de que el cielo se ennegreciera y acabara convertido en leyenda. Su muerte asombró al mundo entero. En 1999, el montañero Conrad Anker descubrió el cuerpo congelado de Mallory. Sus pertenencias fueron encontradas intactas, a falta de un solo objeto, la foto de su mujer Ruth, que el escalador había prometido colocar en lo alto de la cima. Guiados por Anker, en este documental seguimos las huellas de Mallory por la cara noreste de la escalofriante montaña, con el fin de resolver el misterio que rodea su muerte, y descubrir si el valiente montañero consiguió cumplir su sueño de alcanzar la cima.
