Años después de que salvara heroicamente las vidas de los pasajeros de un avión Jumbo, cuya tripulación cayó intoxicada, Ted Striker trabaja como piloto de pruebas de la nueva Lanzadera lunar. Sin embargo será enviado a una institución mental tras estrellar su nave de pruebas, a pesar de no tener la culpa. Angela, an Italian-American woman, after many years returned to Sicily to attend the funeral of her father. During the ferry trip she meets Salvo, a teenager boy who claims to be hunted by the Mafia, because of a quantity of drugs he stole to some criminals. She decides to give him a ride and the two embark on a journey through Sicily. His amorous attentions are soon obvious, and leads to a fairly obvious ending.

A man paves his own way to his own soul through an intellectual quest, tragedies of nations and personal drama. The road moving through the cosmic distances is a flight into one's internal world. This flight and this drama are revealed in this philosophical film-poem.

Two lovers perform a fandango dance. A jealous quarrel follows and the heart-broken swain decides to end it all. He throws himself from the window of his room, but instead of falling to his death, the anchor of a passing balloon intercepts his flight and he is taken high into the clouds. Laughing at his plight, the moon arouses the anger of the desperate lover and a battle between the two ensues.

A drunk staggers into his apartment and falls asleep. He dreams he climbs to the top of a building and flies to the moon, then falls back to earth. When he wakes, still drunk, he is in his apartment.

The astronauts themselves discuss America's lunar missions, from the race with Soviet Union to the first steps on the moon's surface.
