Bajo la estatua del Buda que destruyeron los talibanes, aún viven miles de familias. Baktay, una niña afgana de seis años, es incitada a ir a la escuela por el hijo de sus vecinos que lee los alfabetos frente a su cueva. De camino a la escuela, es acosada por unos niños que juegan de forma cruel reflejando la sociedad tan violenta que los envuelve. Los niños pretenden lapidar a Baktay, o destruirla como el Buda, o disparar contra ella como hicieron los americanos en el laberinto de cuevas. ¿Será capaz Baktay de superar estos obstáculos para poder aprender los alfabetos en su lengua materna?
Production Design
Bajo el opresivo régimen talibán, la madre de una muchacha de 12 años, médico de profesión, pierde su empleo en un hospital y las dos mujeres, así como la abuela, se convierten en auténticas prisioneras en su propia casa, ya que no pueden abandonarla sin un «acompañante legal» y tienen prohibido trabajar fuera para ganarse la vida. La madre y la abuela urden un plan: le cortarán el pelo a la chica y cambiarán su indumentaria, para que parezca un muchacho. Asustada ante la posibilidad de que se descubra su secreto, la joven –que ha adoptado el nombre de Osama– empieza a trabajar para un tendero del vecindario, que fue amigo de su padre. Pero pronto llega a la edad de tener que acudir a la escuela islámica, y allí será más difícil ocultar su verdadera identidad.

Los vecinos de un barrio de Teherán denuncian en la Dirección de Asuntos Sociales la dramática situación en la que se encuentran dos hermanas gemelas de 11 años, encerradas por su padre desde su nacimiento, alegando que sus hijas son como flores que pueden marchitarse con el sol. Cuando las autoridades toman cartas en el asunto, las hermanas quedarán libres y se enfrentarán a un nuevo mundo totalmente desconocido para ellas. Desiderium lyrically charts the hapless loves of a three brother: Majid, they young handicapped brother with a deformed head falls in love with Aghdas, a prostitute hired by his eldest brother Habib to entertain him, not knowing the truth about her profession. Karim, the middle brother is so infatuated with a quail that he almost completely ignores his wife and her emotions. Habib himself is in love with Foroogh, a tailor lady who lives with them, while his sense of responsibility about Majid keeps him from requiting her affections.

The father, observing the problems of his children, goes insane and is confined to an asylum. For its political and social content, the film was banned by the government for several years.
