Luna y Amar son una joven pareja muy unida que intenta superar los obstáculos que surgen en su relación: el alcoholismo de él, la obsesión de ella por ser madre, las dificultades económicas y dos maneras distintas de entender la religión. Tras ser despedido del trabajo por su adicción a la bebida, Amar acepta un trabajo en una comunidad musulmana fundamentalista, bastante alejada de Sarajevo. Le ruega a Amar que vuelva a casa, pero él se opone porque en ese ambiente ha encontrado la paz y ha logrado superar su afición a la bebida.

El productor de televisión Rainer es un hombre de éxito que lo tiene todo: un sueldo estupendo, un lujoso ático, un coche espectacular y una novia más espectacular todavía. A sus treinta y tantos años ha llegado a la cima de su profesión creando unos programas de televisión de lo más vulgar y estúpido. Su último triunfo ha sido un concurso en el que un hombre podía conseguir el premio de ser padre de un niño, si su espermatozoide ganaba una carrera microscópica para fecundar un óvulo.Un día, Pegah, una misteriosa mujer, embiste a toda velocidad el coche de Rainer. Cuando era joven, Ruza dejó Belgrado y emigró a Suiza con la esperanza de emprender allí una nueva vida. 25 años después, todo parece indicar que ha cumplido sus objetivos: es dueña de un comedor en Zurich que regenta con mano firme y buenos resultados económicos. Ruza está muy apegada a su rutina diaria, estructurada meticulosamente, pero su ordenado mundo da un vuelco cuando entra en escena Anna, una joven de veintidós años procedente de Sarajevo. Ruza se siente amenazada por la conducta impulsiva de la joven, aunque también experimenta el magnetismo de su gran energía vital. Poco a poco va creciendo la amistad entre estas dos mujeres que, sin embargo, no consiguen salvar la doble barrera que las separa: el temor que siente Ruza a la hora de abrirse por completo a los demás y un secreto inconfesable de Ana.

Ana and Nicolae, a young Romanian couple, travel by bus from Bucharest to Vienna with the prospect of making quick money by handing over a stolen car. As soon as they arrive, however, they are reassured that the car is not yet ready for them. Ana then wants to go back to Romania, Nicolae would rather travel further west. They are stuck penniless in Vienna.

In the wake of the 1999 elections, four filmmakers decided to go out with cameras in hand and gauge the mood of their countrymen, who had made Jörg Haider's FPO party the second most powerful in Austria. What they found was a country apparently "like any other" , filled with nice ordinary people. Trying hard to suppress the memories of war and alienation, they try to find moral strength and warmth through one another.
