A finales de la II Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), a un selecto grupo de historiadores, directores de museos y expertos en arte, tanto británicos como norteamericanos, se les encomienda la importante y peligrosa misión de recuperar las obras de arte robadas por los nazis durante la guerra para devolvérselas a sus legítimos propietarios. Era una misión imposible: las obras estaban muy bien custodiadas y el ejército alemán tenía orden de destruirlas en cuanto el Reich cayera. Pero aquellos hombres, en una carrera contrarreloj, arriesgaron sus vidas para evitar la destrucción de miles de años de cultura de la humanidad.

Varsovia, 1939. El pianista polaco de origen judío Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody) interpreta un tema de Chopin en la radio nacional de Polonia mientras la aviación alemana bombardea la capital. El régimen nazi ha invadido el país, y como hace en otros países invadidos, lleva a cabo la misma política con respecto a los judíos. A young man from an early age falls in love with a girl whose family is not in good standing with the ruling Communist party. His father however is a member of the "Stasi", the secret state police. The father not only hinders his son's relationship with the girl, but he arranges for his son, after finishing school, to become a Stasi spy himself.

One thing leads to another, and soon she finds herself pregnant.
