When the Japanese invaders subject the area to their rule and cut down the sorghum to make way for a road, the community rises up and resists as the sorghum grows anew.

When elderly pensioner Umberto Domenico Ferrari returns to his boarding house from a protest calling for a hike in old-age pensions, his landlady demands her 15,000-lire rent by the end of the month or he and his small dog will be turned out onto the street. Unable to get the money in time, Umberto fakes illness to get sent to a hospital, giving his beloved dog to the landlady's pregnant and abandoned maid for temporary safekeeping.

唐王朝がその衰退を呈していた9世紀中頃の中国では、政治の腐敗から国内各地に反政府組織が乱立していた。飛刀門という反乱組織を討伐するよう命を受けた捕吏の劉は、美しい盲目の踊り子・小妹を反乱組織の前頭目の娘と目して捕らえ、組織の情報を白状させようとする。口を割らない小妹を組織の一員であると確信する劉は、同僚の捕吏の金に小妹を救出させ、逃亡の行方を追って組織の拠点をつきとめようと策をたてる。金は小妹を牢から救いだし共に逃避行の旅を続け、劉も2人の後を追う。2人の男と1人の女のあいだには、それぞれの策略と思惑と愛とが交じり合い、壮絶な最後に導かれて行く。

平安時代、羅生門の下で雨宿りをする下男（上田吉二郎）相手に、旅法師（千秋実）と杣売り（志村喬）が奇妙な話を語り始める。京の都で悪名高き盗賊多襄丸（三船敏郎）が山中で侍夫婦の妻（京マチ子）を襲い、夫（森雅之）を殺害したという。だが、検非違使による調査が始まると、盗賊と妻の証言はまったく異なっており……。
