David Blaine does it again. With 'Vertigo', we see some more incredible magic and unusual illusions. Intercut with the Magic is David - standing on a pole in NY for two days. A pole that seemed to be extended 10 stories tall with nothing for him to hang on to - and there was nothing to catch him. This portion of the program was live and at the end of the show - he jumped into a stack of cardboard boxes.

大恐慌時代に活躍した実在のボクサー、ジム・ブラドックの伝説を映画化した感動の物語。貧困のなか、家族を養うためだけに戦い、ヘヴィ級チャンピオンとなった小市民を、巨匠ロン・ハワード監督が情感たっぷりに描く。迫力満点のファイト・シーンの撮影も見事。

1950年。第二次世界大戦の終結による満州国の崩壊と国共内戦の終結により、共産主義国である中華人民共和国の一都市となったハルビン駅の構内。5年間にわたるソビエト連邦での抑留を解かれ、中華人民共和国に送還された「戦犯」達がごった返す中で、列から外れた1人の男が洗面所で自殺を試みる。男は監視人の手により一命を取り留めるものの、薄れ行く意識の中で幼い日々の頃を思い出していた。この男こそ清朝最後の皇帝にして満州国の皇帝、「ラスト・エンペラー」と呼ばれた愛新覚羅溥儀その人であった。

1916年、カイロに赴いている英国陸軍のロレンス少尉は、トルコへの反乱に意気込むアラブ民族の現状を確かめに向かった。そこで彼は反乱軍の非力を痛感し、アラブ種族をまとめ上げてゲリラ戦へ打って出ることに。やがて、トルコの一大拠点を巡って激闘を展開し、勝利する。そして、再びゲリラ戦の指揮官として新しい任務を与えられ、トルコ軍を打倒するロレンス。だが、一方でアラブ同士の争いが起こり、彼も尽力むなしく徐々に孤立していく。

奴隷のスパルタカスは奴隷商人バタイアタスに買われ、剣闘士となり、剣闘士としての訓練を受けていた。ある日、ローマの偉大な将軍クラサスが訪れ、剣闘士の真剣勝負を要請した。スパルタカスを含め4人の奴隷が選ばれた。スパルタカスと黒人のドラバが戦い、スパルタカスを仕留める寸前にトラバはクラサスに向かって槍を投げつけたためその場で処刑される……。

1939年、世界最高峰の制覇を目指し、ヒマラヤ山脈へと向かった登山家ハラー。だが彼は第二次世界大戦の勃発により、イギリス軍の捕虜となってしまう。登山仲間とともに、ヒマラヤ山脈を越える決死の脱出を図るハラーたち。そして逃亡の果て彼らは、チベットの聖地へとたどり着く。

Ａ・タルコフスキーの作品は様々な映像の断片がコラージュされたようなものばかりである。この「鏡」もまたそうであり、彼の自伝的要素を持つというが、解るような解らないような……。でもその数々の映像はどれもこれもかっこ良く、戦争の記録フィルムらしきものも出てくる。物語などの存在は忘れてただひたすら映像の中で泳ぐような感覚で、なんとも美しい一本だ。
