とある海辺でボトルの中に入った手紙が発見され、コペンハーゲン警察の特別部署「特捜部Q」で未解決事件を取り扱う、はみだし者の刑事カールと相棒のアサド、そして女性秘書のローセが調査に乗り出すことに。手紙はどうやら7〜8年前に書かれたものでインクがにじんでほとんど判読不能だったが、差出人の頭文字Pを手掛かりに調査を進めるうち、エホバの証人の信者たちの子どもを狙った謎の連続誘拐事件が次第に浮上する。

Smilla Jaspersen, half Danish, half Greenlander, attempts to understand the death of a small boy who falls from the roof of her apartment building. Scenes from the film were shot in Copenhagen and western Greenland. The film was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival, where director Bille August was nominated for the Golden Bear.
