医師のトミーは、脳腫瘍に冒された妻イジーを救うため、新たな治療法を発見しようと必死の研究を続けていた。だが仕事に没頭するあまり、彼は残された時を2人で過ごしたいというイジーの願いに気づけずにいた。イジーはそんな彼に本心を知って欲しいと、16世紀スペインの女王イザベルの命により、不死の秘薬を求める騎士トマスの物語を綴り始める。イジーは空白の最終章を完成させて欲しいと、その物語をトミーに託す。
