On an isolated farm in Apartheid South Africa two lovers find themselves at risk of losing everything to a big city lawyer; they will stop at nothing to prevent him from exposing a dark family secret.
1994年、マンデラはついに南アフリカ共和国初の黒人大統領となる。いまだにアパルトヘイトによる人種差別や経済格差の残る国をまとめるため、彼はラグビーチームの再建を図る。1995年に自国で開催するラグビー・ワールド・カップに向け、マンデラとチームキャプテンのピナールは、一致団結して前進する。
南アフリカ人のティム・ジェンキンは、白人でありながら反アパルトヘイト組織「アフリカ民族会議」の隠密作戦をおこなった罪のより、同胞のスティーブン・リーとともにプレトリア刑務所に投獄される。ティム、スティーブンたちは、自由と平等を手にするため、最高警備を誇る刑務所からの脱獄を決意する。さまざまな脱獄方法を模索した結果、ティムたちが最後に選んだ手段は木片を集めた鍵を使った脱獄だった。鍵を作っては解錠を繰り返し、徐々に出口までの鍵が完成していった。投獄から18カ月、彼らは木鍵による鉄製扉の突破を試みる。
人種隔離政策アパルトヘイトによって、白人たちが優位に立ち、黒人たちが迫害されていた、南アフリカ共和国。弁護士として働いていたネルソン・マンデラは、そんな差別や偏見が当然のように存在している状況に疑問と怒りを感じられずにはいられなかった。その思いを強くするあまり、彼は反アパルトヘイトを訴えた政治活動に身を投じていくが、それと同時に当局から目を付けられるように。活動は熱を帯び、ついには国家反逆罪で逮捕され、終身刑という重い判決を下されてしまう。
1982年、南アフリカ共和国のヨハネスブルク上空に突如宇宙船が出現した。しかし、上空で静止した巨大な宇宙船からは応答や乗員が降りる様子はなく、人類は宇宙船に乗船しての調査を行うことを決定。知的生命体との接触に世界中の期待が集まる中行われた調査であったが、船内に侵入した調査隊が発見したのは、支配層の死亡と宇宙船の故障により難民となった大量のエイリアンであった。 乗船していたエイリアンたちは地上に移り、隔離地区である「第9地区」で難民として、MNU (英：Multi-National United) と呼ばれる超国家機関による管理・監視のもとで生活することになったが、文化や外見の違いから人間とエイリアン達との間では小競り合いが頻発する。人間達のエイリアンへの反発や差別は強まり、やがて彼等に対しては「エビ」（外見がエビ[=PRAWN]に似ているため）という蔑称が定着するようになった。 そして宇宙船出現から28年後、ついにエビ達を新たに用意された彼ら専用の居住区域である第10地区に移住させることが決定し、MNUの職員であるヴィカスは、立ち退き要請の同意を得るため第9地区を訪れるが、エイリアンの家で見つけた謎の液体を不注意により浴びてしまう。
