In her many years as a social worker, Emily Jenkins believes she has seen it all, until she meets 10-year-old Lilith and the girl's cruel parents. Emily's worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to harm the child, and so Emily assumes custody of Lilith while she looks for a foster family. However, Emily soon finds that dark forces surround the seemingly innocent girl, and the more she tries to protect Lilith, the more horrors she encounters.

ニューヨークの駅構内。不審な行動を見咎められ警察に連行される謎の男プロート。彼は自らを遥か1,000光年彼方のK－PAX星からやって来た異星人だと名乗り精神病院に送られる。プロートの治療に当たるのは精神科のパウエル医師。初めのうちは単なる妄想か虚言と高を括っていたパウエルだったが、その落ち着き払った言動や理路整然とした説明にかすかな疑問を抱き始める。さらに、プロートの存在は他の患者たちにも強い影響を与え、パウエルが治せずにいる患者たちがみるみる回復していく。
動物愛護活動家が医療科学研究所を襲撃した。研究員はチンパンジーが危険な感染症にかかっていると警告するが活動家は耳を貸そうとしない。檻から出した途端、チンパンジーは研究員や活動家に襲いかかった。28日後。交通事故で昏睡状態に陥っていたバイク・メッセンジャーのジムは、ロンドン市内の病院の集中治療室で意識を取り戻す。ベッドから起き廊下をさまようジムだったが院内にはまったく人の気配がなかった。人の影を求めて街へ飛び出したジムは、そこで驚くべき光景を目にする。
老朽化したバスルームで対角線上に倒れていたふたりの男ゴードンとアダム。その間には自殺死体が。足を鎖でつながれた男たちに与えられたのは、テープレコーダー、一発の弾、タバコ2本、着信用携帯電話、2本のノコギリ。犯人から告げられたメッセージは「6時間以内に相手を殺すか、自分が死ぬか」。犯人は警察に追われている連続殺人鬼ジグゾウだった。
国連で通訳として働くシルビアは、謎の人物たちのグー語の会話から、ある人物の暗殺計画を偶然立ち聞きしてしまう。彼女の周りに怪しい人物が暗躍し、シークレット・サービスのトビンが彼女を守る任務につく。
