雪深い山に金鉱を捜し求めてきた一人の金鉱探し・チャーリー。猛吹雪に難渋した上、転がり込んだ小屋にはお尋ね者のブラック・ラーセンがいた。やがて、同じく猛吹雪で転がり込んできた金鉱探しのビッグ・ジム・マッケイと避難生活を送ることとなる。寒さと飢えがピークに達し、ビッグ・ジムはチャーリーがニワトリに見える始末。やがて靴を食べる生活まで始めた。 ビッグ・ジムと別れ、麓に出来た新興の街にやってきたチャーリーは酒場で出会ったジョージアに一目ぼれ。最初はチャーリーの単なる片思いであったが、ジョージアも粗暴なジャックに愛想を尽かし、チャーリーに少しずつ思いを寄せるようになる。 酒場で偶然再会したビッグ・ジムと艱難辛苦の上、ついに金鉱を探し当て百万長者になったチャーリー。帰りの船上でジョージアと再会。めでたく結ばれる。

An alcoholic checks into a health spa and his antics promptly throw the establishment into chaos.

Charlie and his friend Ambrose meet in a restaurant and accidentally leave with each other's coats. Charlie was going to pick up a baby bottle and Ambrose was going to mail a love letter that was in his coat pocket. Charlie's wife finds the letter and thinks he has a secret lover and Ambrose's wife believes he has an illegitimate child. Controversy arises in the park between Charlie and his wife and Ambrose and his wife. It is resolved at the end, but Charlie sparks another fight between the other couple by showing his friend's wife the love letter that was in his pocket.

チャップリンがアドルフ・ヒトラーの独裁政治を批判した作品で、ヒトラーとナチズムに対して非常に大胆に非難と風刺をしつつ、ヨーロッパにおけるユダヤ人の苦況をコミカルながらも生々しく描き、ニューヨーク映画批評家協会賞で主演男優賞を受賞した。 またこの作品は、チャップリン映画初の完全トーキー作品でもある。 1918年の第一次大戦末期、トメニアのユダヤ人一兵卒チャーリーは飛行機事故で記憶を失い入院する。それから数年後のトメニアは独裁者アデノイド・ヒンケルの天下で、ユダヤ人掃討の真っ最中。そんな折、退院したチャーリーは生まれ育ったユダヤ人街で元の床屋の職に戻る。親衛隊の傍若無人ぶり、特にそれが恋人ハンナに及ぶに至り、彼は勇猛果敢かつ抱腹絶倒のレジスタンスを開始。それがどういうわけかヒンケル総統の替え玉を演じさせられることになり……。

大きな製鉄工場で働くチャーリーは、スパナを手にひたすらベルトコンベアーを流れる部品にねじを回し続けるという単純作業を繰り返していた。その様子はテレビモニターで監視され、休む暇もなく働かされていた。ある日、チャーリーは労働者の食事時間を節約するために作られた自動給食マシーンの実験台にされ散々な目に合わされる。その後も仕事を続けていく内にチャーリーは発狂し、トラブルを起こして精神病院送りになってしまう。ようやく退院を迎えた日、トラックから落ちた赤旗を拾い運転手に返そうと追いかけていく内にいつの間にか労働者のデモ隊の先導をきってしまい、そのリーダーと間違われて捕まって拘置所に入れられてしまう。脱獄囚を撃退した功績で模範囚として放免され造船所の仕事を紹介されるものの、上手くいかず辞めてしまい、あてもなく街をうろつく生活に陥ってしまう。 拘置所が恋しくなったチャーリーはわざと無銭飲食をして捕まえられるが、護送車の中でパンを盗んだ浮浪少女（ポーレット・ゴダード）と出会う。護送車が急カーブで横転し、外へ投げ出されたチャーリーと少女は逃亡。少女と意気投合したチャーリーは、2人のために家を建てるという夢を胸に一念発起とばかり働き出す。デパートの夜回り、工場の技師の助手と仕事を獲得するものの結局上手くいかず、2件とも警察沙汰になるという不運な結果に終わってしまう。その後少女が勤め始めたキャバレー[3]のウェイターの職を得る。見世物の「ティティナ」を歌って大成功したが、少女の微罪のため、そこも追われてしまう。やっとの思いで手に入れた幸福すらも失い悲しみに打ちひしがれる少女を、チャーリーは力強く励ます。 そして、二人は未来に希望を見出し、現代社会の冷たさと束縛に囚われない自由な生活を求めて共に旅立っていくのだった。

革命のため国を追われたイゴール・シャドフ王（King Igor Shahdov）（チャールズ・チャップリン）は、ほぼ無一文でニューヨークにやって来るが、同行した首相に証券類までも盗まれてしまう。王は原子力を使ってユートピアを創るという自分のアイデアを実現させるべく、原子力委員会と接触を図る。ある夕食会で（王に無断でテレビ中継されていた）、演劇の経験があることを明らかにしたため、その後、テレビコマーシャルへの出演依頼が殺到する。最初は気のすすまぬ王であったが、後に生活資金を得るためいくつかのコマーシャルに出演する。ある進歩主義学校を訪問した王は、ルパート・マカビーという10歳の少年（マイケル・チャップリン）に会う。彼は学校新聞の編集者で歴史に造詣が深く、王にアナキズム的な講釈を行う。ルパートはいかなる政府も信用しないと述べるが、両親は共産党員であった。次第に王自身が共産党員であると疑われるようになり、マッカーシーの下院非米活動委員会（当時アメリカで赤狩りを行っていた委員会）に喚問される。王の容疑は晴れ、離婚して今はパリにいる元王妃と再会する決意をする。しかし、ルパートの両親は投獄され、委員会は少年に両親の友人達の名前を密告するよう迫る。少年は王と再会した際、両親の友人の名を密告したことで「愛国者」と称えられるが、罪の意識に苛まれ苦しんでいた。王は赤狩りのばかばかしさにあきれ、少年に両親と共にヨーロッパに来るよう招待する。

ジョゼフ・デルテーイの小説版による“ジャンヌ・ダルク裁判”の物語で、間違いなくサイレント映画の一つの到達点だろう。“悪魔の子”とされ拷問を受けるジャンヌが苦しみに一度は屈服し、囚人として髪を刈られるシーンの厳しさ（実際に髪を切られ涙するクローズ・アップ）、そして自分を持ち直し、あえて火刑台に向かい火にかけられ、苦悶に顔を歪める瞬間、見る者をも貫く痛み（これも鮮烈なクローズ・アップで表現される）。
