ハンクはアメリカ南部の刑務所で死刑囚棟の看守を長年務めてきた男。彼の父も同じ看守を務め、今は息子のソニーが同じ道を歩み始めたところだった。ハンクは父譲りの人種差別主義者だったが、息子のソニーは心の優しい人間で、そんなハンクの考え方に疑問を感じていた。黒人の囚人ローレンス・マスグローヴの処刑の日、ハンクとソニーが電気椅子に向かうローレンスに付き添うことになったが、慣れないソニーは執行の直前に取り乱してしまった。刑の執行後、自らの職務に厳格なハンクはそんなソニーの態度を厳しく叱責してしまう。
