コニーアイランドの遊園地内にあるレストランで働いている元女優のジニーは、再婚同士で結ばれた回転木馬操縦係の夫・ハンプティと、ジニーの連れ子である息子のリッチーと3人で、観覧車の見える安い部屋で暮らしている。しかし、ハンプティとの平凡な毎日に失望しているジニーは夫に隠れて、海岸で監視員のアルバイトをしながら劇作家を目指している若い男ミッキーと不倫していた。ミッキーとの未来に夢を見ていたジニーだったが、ギャングと駆け落ちして音信不通になっていたハンプティの娘キャロライナの出現により、すべてが大きく狂い出していく。
