1917年、司祭に任ぜられたファーモイルは聖ヨハネ教会の助任司祭として就任した。しかし、リアリストの主任司祭と理想を追うファーモイルは対立し、自分の意見を発表するために本を著した。これがボストン大教区の枢機卿グレノン大司教に知れ、いなかの貧しい教区に転任させられが、ここで病身をおして教区の人たちに心を砕く神父に会い、謙遜の尊さを知る。グレノン大司教はファーモイルの成長を知り、再び自分の下に呼びもどし秘書とした。ボストンの家に帰ったファーモイルは妹モナが異常妊娠で苦しむのを目の当たりにするが聖職につく身では堕胎をすすめられず妹は亡くなる。
