A Portuguese soldier, who got stranded from his team during the La Lys battle, struggles by himself through dozens of German offensives so he can guarantee the safety of his companions.
第1次大戦がはじまってまもない、ドイツのある町。群衆の歓声に送られて、戦場へ向かう大部隊が進軍してゆく。学校の教室では、老教師が生徒に愛国心を説いていた。情熱に駆り立てられた若者たちは、ただちに出征を志願するが、前線は飢えと死の恐怖だけの毎日だった。
19世紀末のロシア。ユーリー・ジバゴは医学の勉強を続けるかたわら詩人としても知られるようになった。幼い頃両親を失い、科学者グロメーコにひきとられた彼は、その家の娘トーニャを愛していた。2人の婚約発表のパーティーの日、近所の仕立屋の娘ラーラは、弁護士コマロフスキーの誘惑から逃れるため、彼に発砲するという事件を起こした。彼女は帝政打倒の革命に情熱をもやす学生パーシャを愛していた。1914年、ロシアは第1次大戦に突入し、ジバゴは医師として従軍し、戦場で看護婦として働らくラーラに再会した。彼は、彼女がパーシャと結婚したと知ったが、彼女への愛をどうすることもできなかった。
チャップリンがアドルフ・ヒトラーの独裁政治を批判した作品で、ヒトラーとナチズムに対して非常に大胆に非難と風刺をしつつ、ヨーロッパにおけるユダヤ人の苦況をコミカルながらも生々しく描き、ニューヨーク映画批評家協会賞で主演男優賞を受賞した。
またこの作品は、チャップリン映画初の完全トーキー作品でもある。
1918年の第一次大戦末期、トメニアのユダヤ人一兵卒チャーリーは飛行機事故で記憶を失い入院する。それから数年後のトメニアは独裁者アデノイド・ヒンケルの天下で、ユダヤ人掃討の真っ最中。そんな折、退院したチャーリーは生まれ育ったユダヤ人街で元の床屋の職に戻る。親衛隊の傍若無人ぶり、特にそれが恋人ハンナに及ぶに至り、彼は勇猛果敢かつ抱腹絶倒のレジスタンスを開始。それがどういうわけかヒンケル総統の替え玉を演じさせられることになり……。
The story takes place in 1917. Véronique is a young woman of 35 years, nurse at the military hospital of Besançon. The safety of mental hospital in a war-torn Belgrade is disrupted when the deputy military governor in occupied Belgrade, Kosta Herman, finds out that Kočić is in the hospital and decides to settle old scores with him.

When the World War breaks out, Billy remains unconcerned until his younger brother is killed in action. Billy then immediately enlists and is sent to France; Peggy joins the Red Cross to be with him, and Grace Laidlaw, Billy's wife, also goes to France, working with the Y. M. C. A. Billy is assigned to destroy an ammunition dump, and Peggy learns, after he has left on the mission, that he has been recalled.
