内気で不器用な高校生テッドが憧れのメリーとデートする幸運をつかむが、ズボンのファスナーがひっかかるトラブルがもとでデートは中止、メリーとの仲もそれきりになってしまう。13年後、テッドはまだメリーのことを忘れられず--やや妄執的--、怪しげな探偵パット・ヒーリーを雇って、マイアミに住むメリーを調査してもらう。ところがパットもメリーに夢中になってしまい、テッドとパットのあいだで騙しあい化かし合いのメリー争奪戦になる。やがて2人はメリーに首ったけなのが自分たちだけではないのを知り、結局、5人の男たちがメリーに自分を選ぶよう迫ることになる。
