インチキ霊媒師が巻き込まれた犯罪を、サスペンス豊かに描いたヒッチコックの遺作。インチキ霊媒師のブランチは、富豪の老婦人にとりいって、行方不明の息子を探し出す仕事を得た。ブランチの調査によって、宝石店を営むアーサーが、その息子であることが判明する。だが、アーサーの裏の顔は、営利誘拐を繰り返す犯罪者であった。自分の身辺を探るブランチに、アーサーは次第に危機感を覚えていく……。
