地球外知的生命体の存在を研究している天文学者エリーは、ある夜、未知の電波をキャッチする。それはヴェガ星からのものであり、地球上の映像と謎の設計図が納められていることが判明。それはヴェガ星への輸送機関であった。急ピッチで基地が建造されるが、エリーはパイロットの選考から洩れてしまう。だがテロリストによってヴェガへの発進基地は無残にも破壊されてしまう。

世界最大の検索エンジンを運営するブルーブック社のプログラマーである青年ケイレブは試験の結果、社長ネイサンが隠遁生活を送る山荘で1週間滞在することに。人里離れた土地にある山荘はネイサンが人工知能を研究している施設で、ケイレブは人工知能の実用性と人間性についてのテストに協力させられる。そこで人工知能を持つ女性型ロボットのエヴァと出会うが、エヴァはネイサンが嘘つきなので気を付けろとケイレブに警告する。
