An LA detective is murdered because she has microfilm with the recipe to make cocaine cookies. Two cops partner to find and stop the fiends before they can dope the nation by distributing their wares via the 'Wilderness Girls' cookie drive.

定年退職間近の刑事サマセットと新人のミルズは、ある殺人現場に向かう。そこには肥満の大男の凄惨な死体があった。またほどなくして、今度はビジネスマンの死体が発見される。サマセットはそれぞれの現場に残されていた文字から、犯人がキリスト教における七つの大罪(傲慢・嫉妬・憤怒・怠惰・強欲・暴食・色欲)に因んだ殺人に及んでいると分析、残るは5件となった。事件を未然に防ごうと犯人の特定を急ぐ2人。やがて一人の男が容疑者に浮上、しかし接近するも取り逃がし、さらなる犠牲者を出してしまう。そんな中、大罪に沿った犯行が残り2件となったところで、犯人を名乗る男が自首して来るのだが…。

1937年のロスアンゼルス。私立探偵ジェイクはモーレイ夫人からダム建設技師である夫の浮気調査を依頼される。だが、盗み取りした写真がなぜか新聞に掲載され、それを見たもうひとりのモーレイ夫人が現れる。実は彼女こそ本物で、名をイヴリンという。ジェイクはこれがダム建設をめぐる疑惑と関係ありと睨んで調査を開始するが、モーレイは溺死体で発見され、ジェイクもまた謎の男たちに暴行を受ける。探偵と依頼人という関係を越えはじめたイヴリンとジェイクだったが、なおも謎は深まるばかりだった……。
