Ａ・パチーノの初監督作品。シェイクスピア作品では難解とされる、『リチャード三世』の映像化をめぐるドキュメンタリー。彼は主演の他、製作とナレーション台本も共同で担当している。出演者はみな俳優である自分自身として登場し、映画化のためのディスカッションやリハーサルに加え、実際に扮装、演技までする。これに街頭でのインタヴューやシェイクスピアの生家の探訪、シェイクスピア作品ゆかりの俳優のインタヴューが挿入される。これらは『リチャード三世』のストーリーに沿って展開されるが、前記の模様が様々にモンタージュされ、配役や作品の解釈は言うに及ばず、シェイクスピアやその作品の解釈、それに取り組む様を浮き彫りにしていく。単なるメイキングにとどまらず、演じる様子だけでなく、映像化された画面や、映像化に向けての様々なアプローチを取り入れることにより、親しみのある作品に仕上がっている。劇中インタヴュー出演はＪ・ギールガッド、Ｋ・ブラナー、Ｖ・レッドグレイヴ、Ｄ・ジャコビ、Ｊ・Ｒ・ジョーンズ、Ｋ・クライン。全米監督組合でドキュメンタリー部門の監督賞を受賞。

死者が蘇り人間を食らう世界。死者の数がもやは手が付けられぬほど増加し絶望的になっていく。フロリダの地下軍事基地でゾンビ研究を行いながら細々と生き残るグループ。ローガン博士はゾンビを飼いならし人間を襲わないよう凶暴性を取り除く実験に光を見出していたが一向に進展しない状況に軍隊グループと次第に軋轢が高まっていく。施設内で実験としてゾンビを飼いならすまともでない実験が軍の指揮官ローズに発覚した事で、張り詰めていた緊張が爆発し軍人たちは研究者を襲撃し格納していたヘリで脱出を始めるが、追い詰めらた彼らはゲートを開けてしまいゾンビがなだれ込んで来る。

5話の短編で構成されたオムニバスのホラー映画。1950年代のECコミックに代表される、20世紀中盤に隆盛を誇った“ホラーや犯罪物語を題材としたアメリカン・コミックス”の再現を作品全体のテーマとしている。スティーヴン・キングがオリジナル脚本を書き下ろし、製作陣には『ゾンビ』他の監督ジョージ・A・ロメロ、特殊メイクアーティスト、トム・サヴィーニなど数多くの著名人が名を連ね、キング本人とその息子ジョー・ヒル、サヴィーニは俳優としても出演している。

世界各地で原因が判らぬまま死体が蘇り、生きている人間を襲って食べる現象が蔓延し次第に社会は大混乱していく。アメリカ地方テレビ局のスティーブンとフランはこの状況から都市部を脱出する事にした。友人のSWAT隊員ロジャーと同僚ピーターと共にヘリコプターで人の少ない田舎を目指すが、途中孤立したショッピングモールに立ち寄る。何でもそろっているショッピングモールは隔離して中のゾンビを駆除してしまえば安全と思われ、出入り口を閉鎖し快適な空間へ作り変えていく。そんな中、暴徒と化した暴走集団がショッピングモールに目をつけ襲撃してくる。暴動集団の無計画な襲撃をやり過ごす中、ゆっくりとだが群がるゾンビが彼ら人間を確実に取り囲んでいく。
