まだ氷河が残る太古の北米。ある集落に暮らす3人兄弟の末弟キナイは、村から魚を盗んだ熊を追って、逆に熊に襲われる。長兄シトゥカの助けでキナイは救われるが、代わりにシトゥカは命を落としてしまう。怒ったキナイは熊から命を奪うが、直後、精霊の力で彼は熊の姿に変えられてしまう。キナイは森をあてもなく歩き回り、母とはぐれた子熊コーダと出会う。一方、次男デナヒは熊となったキナイを殺された兄弟の仇だと誤解する。
