名優・高倉健が、降旗康男監督とコンビを組んだ20本目で、高倉健の遺作となった作品。 富山の刑務所で指導教官を務める倉島英二に、亡くなった妻・洋子から届いた絵手紙。そこには今まで知らされることの無かった“故郷の海に散骨して欲しい”という洋子の想いが記されていた。その真意を知るために、故郷へ向けて車で一人旅を始める英二。その旅は富山[4]から始まり飛騨高山、京都、瀬戸内、下関、北九州市門司区、そして洋子の故郷である長崎県平戸の漁港・薄香へと続く。風光明媚な地で出会うさまざまな人々と、さまざまな人生。出会いと別れ。そしてそれは英二が洋子の深い愛情に改めて気付かされる旅でもあった。

観葉植物販売会社「サニープラント販売」で同僚の田口が自殺してからというもの、ミチの周辺では身近な人たちが次々と黒い影を残し姿を消していってしまった。 同じ頃、大学生の亮介は、”ウラヌス”というプロパイダでパソコンで噂で聞いていた「幽霊に会いたいですか」と問う奇妙なサイトにアクセスしてしまう。 次々と黒い影を残し消える人たち。不気味に変容しはじめる世界。亮介が思いを寄せていた春江も不可解な行動をとり始める。 赤いテープに囲われたアパートのドアを見つめて佇む作業員が何かをしてしまったことが始りのようだった。 親しいものたちが消えてゆき日常が崩壊していく中、ミチと亮介は出会い、共に逃避しようとするが寸前、亮介にも危険が及んでしまう。ミチはそれでも亮介を連れ、幽かな希望目指して船出するのだった。

某テレビ局のディレクターである浅川玲子は、都市伝説にまつわる取材の中で、見た者を1週間後に死に至らしめる「呪いのビデオ」に関わったと噂される男女が、数日前に奇怪な死を遂げた自分の姪、大石智子と同日の同時刻に死亡していることに気づく。調査を進めた玲子は、同時に死んだ智子たち4人の間には交友関係があり、彼らが1週間前に伊豆の貸し別荘「伊豆パシフィックランド」に宿泊していたこと、そしてその際に撮影されたフィルム写真上の4人の顔が不気味に歪んでいることに着目する。彼らの死の謎を突きとめようとして問題の貸し別荘を訪れた玲子は、そこで貸出されていた不審なビデオの映像を見てしまい、直後に不気味な無言電話を受け取る。これを境に、玲子自身の写真もまた死んだ4人と同様に歪んだ顔で写るようになってしまう。
