Nicaragua Part 2: The Making of a Nation (1985)

Some time after her death, film director Jill Craigie (1911- 99), re-opens an old suitcase, prompting memories of the extraordinary life and loves of this forceful, charismatic woman, whose work has been long neglected. Craigie was one of the first women to direct documentaries. Working outside the British Documentary Movement in the 1940s and early 1950s, her films such as To Be Woman (1951), on equal pay, and Out of Chaos (1944), the first film about artists at work, featuring Henry Moore and Paul Nash, tackled new subjects for the cinema through a unique blend of drama, polemic and humour. Independent Miss Craigie uses the director’s unseen papers, and her films, to reveal her energetic struggles to get her radical projects made and distributed, including her last one, on the Yugoslav conflict, made when she was 83, with her husband, former Labour leader, Michael Foot.

Climate change is among the world’s greatest challenges. As a small Caribbean island, Cuba is disproportionately affected by climate change through extreme weather events. Up to 10% of Cuban territory could be submerged by the end of the century, wiping out coastal towns, polluting water supplies, destroying agricultural lands and forcing one million people to relocate. Finding solutions is now essential. In this documentary, Dr Helen Yaffe goes to Cuba to find out about ‘Tarea Vida’ (Life Task), a long-term state plan to protect the population, environment and the economy from climate change. The Cuban approach combines environmental science, natural solutions and community participation in strategies for adaptation and mitigation. Revolutions on Granite is a documentary about Maidan Nezahlezhonsti, a public square in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine — famously home to a number of political revolutions, but also the birthplace of a cultural revolution after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The film takes a look at the burgeoning skateboard scene at Maidan in the early 1990’s, and investigates the idea of a counterculture being created in a place of strict uniformity.

1957년 10월 어느 새벽, 알제리 민족 해방 전선(Font de Libration Nationale, FNL) 소속의 나이 든 반군 한 명이 프랑스 군인들의 고문을 견디다 못해 마지막 남은 지도자 알리의 은신처를 누설하고 만다. 은신처를 포위한 프랑스군은 당장이라도 폭파할 태세이다. 오직 해방을 목표로 투쟁해 온 지도자 알리는 생사의 갈림길에서 상념에 잠긴 채 치열했던 지난 3년을 회상한다... 1954년에서 1962년 사이, 9년간 프랑스의 식민 통치에 대항한 FNL의 무장 독립 투쟁과 프랑스군의 정치적 폭력 행위 등을 다큐멘터리 형식으로 재구성한 영화다.

남북전쟁이 끝난 후, 새로운 돈벌이를 찾는 미국의 총잡이들은 황제군과 민중반란군의 내전이 벌어지고 있던 멕시코로 모여든다. 냉혹한 무법자 조 에린과 전 남군 대령 벤 트레인은 그중에서도 일급 총잡이들로, 두 사람은 막시밀리안 황제에게 사례금을 받고 백작부인을 베라 크루즈까지 호위하기로 한다. 이들은 수행 도중 백작부인의 마차에서 막대한 양의 황금을 발견한다. 백작부인은 황제의 군자금인 이 황금을 셋이서 빼돌리자고 제안하지만, 백작부인의 배신을 경계하고 있던 후작이 선수를 쳐 황금을 다른 루트로 가져간다. 여기에 황금은 멕시코 민중의 정당한 몫이라고 주장하는 반란군이 가세하여 사태는 더욱 복잡해진다.

사진기자 리차드(제임스 우즈)는 20여년을 싸움터를 찾아다니며 극한 상황 속에서의 인간의 삶과 죽음을 카메라에 담아왔다. 하지만 지금 리처드는 월남전과 캄보디아전에서 받은 충격을 극복하지 못한 채 샌프란시스코의 빈민가에 처박혀 지낸다. 그런 그를 다시 부른 곳은 엘살바도르 내전. 리처드는 친구인 의사 록(제임스 벨루시)과 함께 엘살바도르로 간다. 엘살바도르의 현실은 월남전의 재탕, 그 자체다. 미국의 지원을 받는 군정 당국의 부패한 모습이나 연일 수십 명이 사살되거나 실종되고 있다. 심지어 반정부 발언을 하던 추기경 로메로까지 제단에서 총격을 받아 숨지는 상황이다. 리처드는 그 상황에서 사진 기자로서의 역할을 충실히 실행한다. 그러나 도움을 주었던 옛친구 존 캐시의 눈밖에 나서 가짜 서류를 만들어 옛친구인 마리아와 함께 탈출을 감행한다. 그러나 국경에서 마리아는 살바도르로 되돌아가야 했고, 리처드는 아직도 마리아를 찾아 헤맨다.

Year 1969 - in Turkey. 60s youth were living the most excited days. There was a great effort to make a bridge in Istanbul, on the Bosphorus. Meanwhile, on the eastern border of Turkey, in a Kurdish city between the borders of Iran and Iraq that is left to its destiny, in Hakkari, Zap River was taking lives since there were no passage on it.

레미가 급하게 입원하자 그의 전 부인인 루이즈는 그들의 아들인 세바스티안을 몬트리올 집으로 부른다. 세바스티안과 레미는 여러 해 동안 말도 하지 않고 지내던 사이였으나, 세바스티안은 레미를 기다리고 있는 피할 수 없는 호된 시련을 완화시키기 위해 온갖 노력을 기울인다. 죽어가는 아버지의 침대 옆으로 아들은 학식있는 친척들, 친구들, 전 애인들을 한자리에 불러 모은다. 한때 레미는 이들과 함께 미국제국의 몰락을 꾀했었다. 세바스티안은 이 재치 넘치는 집단의 정치적 불손함이 오늘날의 "야만적인 침략"의 시대에서도 유지될 수있고, 그것을 통해 죽음을 향해 떠나는 아버지의 여정이 조금이나마 밝아지기를 바라는 것이다.

Set against the backdrop of the Indian Emergency, the movie tells the story of three youngsters in the 70s, when India was undergoing massive social and political changes. The movie's title is taken from the couplet of Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib.
