1급 살인죄로 20년형을 선고 받고 복역 중인 로이 터커(Roy Tucker: 진 핵크만 분)는 소년 시절부터 수없이 감옥을 들락거렸고 베트남전에는 명사수로 훈장까지 받은 바 있다. 이러한 그의 과거를 모두 알고 있는 태그(Tagge: 리차드 위드마크 분)란 인물이 그에게 탈옥을 제의해온다. 그 뒤에 버티고있는 '그들'이 누구인지는 정확히 몰랐지만, '그들'이 제시하는 조건에 현혹된 로이는 마침내 '그들'의 제의를 수락한다. 의외로 쉽게 동료 스피벤타(Spiventa: 미키 루니 분)와 탈옥에 성공은 하지만, 스피벤타는 '그들'에 의해 살해되고 만다. 새로운 신분을 얻고 꿈에도 그러던 아내 엘리(Ellie: 캔디스 버겐 분)를 만난 로이. 그러나 행복의 단꿈에 젖어들기도 전에 '그들'은 로이에게 임무를 부여한다. 그가 처리해야할 암살 대상자가 국가적으로 중요한 인물임을 알아본 로이는 붙같이 화를 내며, 경찰에 신고하려 하지만 곧 엘리가 '그들'에 의해 납치되엇음을 알게 된다. 어쩔 수 없이 '그들'이 시키는대로 헬리콥터에 오른 명사수 로이. 결국 암살 대상은 제거되는데...

Taking place in Ferrara, Portofino, Aix en Provence and Paris, each story, which always a woman as the crux of the story, invites to an inner travel, as Antonioni says "towards the true image of that absolute and mysterious reality that nobody will ever see".

Marquis Sévéro, a rich, lazy Parisian, wants to divorce his wife so that he can marry his own goddaughter Denise. But Denise herself loves André Berval, an engineer employed by the marquis. 청각장애인을 부모로 둔 체이니(제임스 캐그니 분)는 극장에서 판토마임과 막간 사이의 촌극 연기자로 일하고 있었다. 그러던 어느 날, 클레바 클라이튼(도로시 말론 분)을 만난 체이니는 그녀를 조수로 채용하게 된다. 함께 일하면서 사랑에 빠진 두 사람은 결혼까지 하게 되지만 체이니가 자신의 양친이 청각장애인이라는 사실을 밝히자, 클레바는 혐오감을 감추지 않는다. 심지어는 아들을 낳고 나서도 아기가 청각 장애일 거라며 쳐다보지도 않으려 한다. 아기가 정상이었음에도 클레바는 불안 증세를 보였고, 체이니가 극장에서 성공을 거듭할수록 그녀의 증세는 더해간다. 결국 클레바는 체이니와 어린 아들을 남겨두고 집을 나가버리고, 체이니는 부양할 돈이 없어 아들마저 다른 가정에 빼앗기고 만다. 결국 체이니는 아들을 되찾겠다는 일념으로 헐리우드를 행한다. 그 곳에서 그는 자신의 재능을 이용해 할 수 있는 일이라면 무엇이든 서슴지 않고 모두 다 해낸다.
