사막 한 가운데서 사냥을 즐기던 모스는 총격전이 벌어진 듯 출혈이 낭자한 사건 현장을 발견한다. 모스는 물 한 모금을 갈구하는 단 한명의 생존자를 외면한 채 떠나다가 우연히 200만 달러가 들어있는 가방을 발견한다. 횡재를 했지만 물을 달라는 요구를 거절한 게 내심 꺼림칙했던 모스는 새벽녘에 현장을 다시 방문하게 되고, 때마침 마주친 경찰에게 쫓기는 신세가 되고 만다. 여기에 200만 달러가 든 가방을 찾는 살인마 안톤 시거와 보안관 벨이 끼어들면서 이야기는 혼돈과 폭력의 결말로 치달아 간다.

고등학교를 막 졸업한 두 친구 알리스(클레어 데인즈)와 달린(케이트 베킨세일)은 둘 만의 자유스러운 여행을 계획한다. 하와이로 정했던 여정을 바꾸어 좀더 이국적인 휴양지를 찾아 태국행 비행기를 탄다. 하루에 6불짜리 호텔은 바퀴벌레가 기어다니지만 11일간의 여행을 시작하는 곳으로는 일상의 고정된 생활로부터 벗어나 자유를 누리기에는 충분했다. 그러나 타지에서의 생활이 그들이 원했던 대로 편하게 다가오는 것만은 아니었다. 고급호텔의 수영장으로 숨어 들어가 수영을 즐기며, 남의 객실에 지불하도록 하고는 값나가는 음료를 대책없이 마셔 댄 둘은 발각이 나지만, 호주에서 왔다는 잘생긴 사내 닉 파크스(다니엘 레페인)는 점잖게 계산서를 처리하면서 두 여성과 친해진다. 친절하게 접근하면서도 의심스러운 파크스는 홍콩에서 주말을 함께 보내자면서 알리스와 달린의 비행기표까지 사주며 동반을 원한다. 홍콩행 비행기를 기다리는 두 아가씨에게 습격하듯이 처들어온 태국의 경찰은 알리스의 가방에서 마약을 발견한다. 그들은 즉시 시궁창 냄새와 벌레가 들끓는 감옥으로 보내지고, 짧았던 자유의 여정은 순식간에 사라진다. 절망적으로 도움을 찾던 그들은 타일랜드에 거주하는 미국인 변호사 행크 그린(빌 풀맨)과 접촉된다. 행크는 돈을 발키면서도 정직해 보이는 변호사로 겉보기에 무죄로 보이는 두 아가씨를 위해 변호를 담당한다. 그러한 작업은 무죄를 입증할 증거조차 찾을 수 없는 상황으로 흐르며, 사건은 태국의 경찰과 연결된 부패된 관리들의 입김이 들어간 조작으로 확대된다.

In an unknown first world airport the arrival of an ecuadorian flight is heard. The 'members of the European Union' passby migration, while the 'others', in the other line, wait. In the middle of the claims, a group of ecuadorians is arrested. They are taken to the Room, where they wait to be deported. Seems like everyone hides something, like PROMETEO the youn magician with his hands tied like a delinquent who has a 'magical' trunk as luggage. Time passes, a way of being, Ecuador happens in this waiting room. Seems like there is no possible exit. Meanwhile, a different but well-known way of life takes place. The only thing left as a promising way out is illusion.

영화는 비교적 짧은 길이에도 불구하고 관객들이 현 브라질의 정치적 상황을 파악할 수 있도록 하는 뛰어남을 선보인다. 마치 영원한 밤이 이어지는 듯한 어느 저녁, 한 남자가 감옥을 나와 길을 걷고 한 무리의 사람들이 경찰 폭력을 당하게 된다.
