태평양 전쟁이 한창이던 1942년 과달카날 섬, 일본군은 호주를 점령하기 위해 섬에 비행장을 건설하고 남태평양 공격선을 구축하고 있다. 위협을 느낀 미국은 해병대를 보내 과달카날 탈환 작전에 나서지만 승부는 쉽게 나지 않는다. 미국은 사기가 떨어진 해병대 병력을 지원하기 위해 육군을 과달콰날 섬에 상륙시키기로 한다. 전쟁의 불안과 공포 속에 과달카날 섬에 이른 육군 지원부대는 아무런 공격을 받지 않고 섬에 상륙한다. 일본군이 점령하고 있는 고지 탈환 작전을 지휘하는 고든 대령은 중대별로 정면 돌파하라는 명령을 내리고 미군은 엄청난 피해를 입는데...

매사에 장난스럽고 전쟁조차 가볍게 생각하는 참전 군인 '미키'(리암 헴스워스)는 휴가를 맞아 '달튼'의 고향에 함께 간다. '미키'는 그곳에서 반전 운동을 하는 똑똑하고 매력적인 여기자 '캔디스'(테레사 팔머)를 만나 한눈에 반한다. 그녀의 환심을 사기 위해 '미키'는 전쟁이 싫어 군에 저항하다 탈영한 혁명가 행세를 하고 마을의 영웅이 된다. 그의 모습에 마음을 연 '캔디스', 그 역시 그녀를 진심으로 사랑하게 된다. 하지만 '캔디스'는 그의 정체를 눈치채기 시작하고 '미키' 역시 그녀에게 진실과 진심을 말할 시간도 없이 군대 복귀일은 다가오는데...

1971년, 미국은 베트남전의 확대로 인해 혼란에 빠져있다. 수천명의 젊은이들은 타지에서 죽어가고, 포트폴크에서는 수천명이 그들과 함께 적진에 뛰어들기 위해 준비하고 있다. 전투의 무서운 그림자는 기본 훈련 마지막 단계인 2소대 A팀에게도 드리워져 그들은 이제 곧 전쟁터로 보내질 예정이다. 이들은 이제 각기 다른 방식으로 다가오는 미래에 대한 마음의 준비를 한다. 짐 팩트선 일병은 손에 노트를 들고 헤밍웨이와 제임스 존스의 전례처럼 전쟁이 자신의 글을 알리는 구실이 되길 기대하는 낭만적 사고에 빠져 있다. 미터는 남자로서의 자신을 증명하고 싶어하고, 캔트웰은 피할 수 없는 상황에 자포자기하고 있으며, 윌슨은 불온한 전투욕에 사로잡혀 있다. 그러나 한 사람의 도전 의식이 소대 전체를 자극한다. 롤랜드 보즈가 이 2소대 A팀에 합세한 후 국가의 양심을 갈라 놓고 있는 양분된 의견이 군의 직위를 넘나들게까지 된 것이다. 영창에서 나온 보즈는 군대를 떠나길 윈하여 작은 프로 테스트를 실행하게 되고 결과를 기다리며 툭하면 명령에 불복종하고 군대를 떠날 구실만 찾고 있다. 그러나 보즈의 이런 행동이 전혀 예상지 못했던 방향으로 사건을 끌고 간다.

LA 경찰국의 애덤스 형사가 러시아 특수정보국 쿠스코 수사관과 사건을 맡는다. 부대를 무단이탈한 해군 장교 콘래드 밀러가 러시아의 정보를 빼돌린 사건이지만 기밀 사항이 많은 탓에 애덤스 형사는 자세한 내막을 모른 채 수사에 착수한다. 콘래드의 여자 친구 로라는 콘래드에 대해 아무것도 모른다고 말하지만, 집과 보트를 내놓고 짐을 싸는 그녀의 모습에 애덤스는 뭔가를 직감한다. 한편 임신한 로라와 새 삶을 시작하기 위해 마지막으로 큰 거래를 앞둔 콘래드. 그는 친구를 만나러 약속 장소로 가는 길에 마약과 인신매매를 일삼는 일당과 의도치 않은 일전을 벌인다. 그리고 결국 콘래드는 자신을 죄어오는 러시아 수사팀과 맞서게 된다. 그러나 위기의 순간에 나타난 로라의 도움으로 수사팀을 벗어나 제시간에 거래를 마친다. 하지만 애덤스는 쿠스코 수사관으로부터 로라가 KGB 요원이라는 사실을 듣게 되는데...

He is weary of war and is intent on going AWOL and escaping from Australia. He becomes infatuated with a local singer, Kathy and pursues her. Kathy is married and initially is not interested in him, but later begins to love Rebel. Kathy receives a letter advising her that her husband was killed in battle. The local police and the U.S. Military are searching for Rebel as an AWOL soldier. Rebel arranges to escape Austalia by a cargo ship, but eventually allows himself to be arrested in order to keep the local police from arresting Kathy for harboring him

Life inside is bad enought without the worry of what is going on outside. The film is based upon a true story.
