인도네시아 수마트라의 한 작은 마을, 이곳에서 어머니를 모시고 농사를 지으며 살아가는 ‘유다’는 인도네시아 전통 무술 ‘실랏’을 연마하는 건실한 청년이다. ‘실랏’에 뛰어난 실력을 보여 온 그는 마을의 전수자로 임명되고 전통에 따라 ‘메란타우’라는 의식을 수행해야 하는 운명에 놓이게 된다. ‘메란타우’란 마을을 떠나 다른 지역을 돌며 다양한 경험을 통해 자아를 발견하는 일종의 수행과 같은 것. 앞서 이 의식으로 인해 부상을 당한 많은 마을 청년들 때문에 걱정하는 어머니를 뒤로 하고 ‘유다’는 묵묵히 수행의 길을 떠난다. ‘자카르타’에 도착한 ‘유다’는 지인의 도움을 받기 위해 연락을 취하지만 연결이 되지 않자 이곳 저곳을 떠돌며 도심 뒷골목에서 벌어지고 있는 슬픈 현실들을 직접 목격하게 된다. 그러던 어느 날, 인신매매조직에게 끌려가는 ‘아스트리’라는 어린 소녀를 보게 된 ‘유다’는 위험을 무릎 쓰고 그녀를 구하기 위해 인신매매조직원들과 목숨을 건 격투를 벌이게 되는데...

French colonists in Africa, several months behind in the news, find themselves at war with their German neighbors. Deciding that they must do their proper duty and fight the Germans, they promptly conscript the local native population. Issuing them boots and rifles, the French attempt to make "proper" soldiers out of the Africans. A young, idealistic French geographer seems to be the only rational person in the town, and he takes over control of the "war" after several bungles on the part of the others.

On an obscure Pacific Island just north of Australia, the Japanese Empire has operated a prisoner of war camp for Australian soldiers. At the close of World War II, the liberated POWs tell a gruesome tale of mass executions of over eight hundred persons as well as torture style killings of downed Australian airmen. In an attempt to bring those responsible to justice, the Australian Army establishes a War Crimes Tribunal to pass judgement on the Japanese men and officers who ran the Ambon camp.
