특수부대 요원이있던 '맥스'는 딸을 구해 달라는 한 남자의 의뢰를 받고 바이러스에 감염된 좀비들이 우글거리는 감염 지역에 잠입한다. 하지만 함께 임무를 맡았던 동료들은 죽거나 감염 지역을 빠져나가고, 맥스는 임무 완수를 위해 홀로 좀비들과 맞서며 의뢰인의 딸 '주드'를 찾아 헤맨다. 한편 상점에서 필요한 물건을 챙기던 중 좀비들에게 쫓기게 된 주드는 그녀를 찾던 맥스를 만나 목숨을 구한다. 아버지의 의뢰로 자신을 구하러 왔다는 맥스의 말에 그녀는 그에 대한 얘기는 입도 뻥긋 말라고 신신당부를 하며 그녀와 함께 생존해 있던 일행들에게 맥스를 데려간다. 생존자들의 리더인 '듀크'는 맥스를 환영하면서도 의심의 눈초리를 거두지 않고, 다음 날 주드를 데리고 탈출하려던 맥스를 거리 한 가운데에 묶어 둔 채 떠나버린다. 그러던 중 놀라운 사실을 알게 된 주드의 연인 '리스'는 그녀를 탈출시키기 위해 맥스를 찾아나서고, 둘은 든든한 지원군과 함께 생존자들의 아지트로 돌아온다. 곧 도시가 불바다가 될 거라는 맥스의 말에 듀크 역시 그들과 함께 길을 나서고, 생존자들은 무사히 살아나가기 위해 마지막 준비를 하는데...

1975년 4월, 월남의 패망으로 미군이 철수하는 사이공의 거리는 피난민들로 인한 아수라장이 되어 있다. 대사관에 근무하던 월남 여인 린(Lin Tan Cang: 미키 킹 분)과 결혼한 미군 대령 브래독(Braddock: 척 노리스 분)은 그녀와 함께 미국으로 떠나기 위해 집으로 향한다.
그러나 지비에 도착한 브래독은 폭격을 받아 파괴된 집에서 자신이 선물로 준 팔찌를 낀 여인의 시체를 발견하게 된다. 그후 12년이 지난 어느날, 군복을 벗은 브래독에게 월맹 치하에서 고아원을 경영하는 신부 폴란스키(Reverend Polanski: 예후다 에프로니 분)가 찾아와 아내와 아들이 살아있다는 소식을 전해준다. 곧이어 CIA에서도 같은 연락이 오자 그는 신변을 걱정한 CIA측의 만류도 뿌리친 채 월맹으로 단신 입국, 아내와 아들을 구출할 결심을 하게 된다. 방콕에 도착한 그는 동료의 도움을 받아 베트남에 침투한다. 그리고 곧 폴란스키 신부를 통해 아내와 아들을 만나게 되지만, 월남군에 잡히게 된다. 이때 아내가 죽고, 그는 고문을 천신만고 끝에 뚫고 탈출하여 아들과 신부가 데리고 있는 미국 아이들을 데리고 국경을 넘는 액션을 펼치는데...

제목대로 “나는 좀비와 함께 걸었다”는 내레이션으로 시작되는 영화는, 자칫 현재의 좀비영화를 생각한다면 커다란 실망감을 줄 수도 있다. 이것은 우리가 지금 알고 있는 좀비영화도 아닐뿐더러 어떤 면에서는 대단한 사건도 일어나지 않는, 그래서 분위기와 인물만이 부각되는 영화이기 때문이다. 영화는 캐나다 출신의 간호사 벳시가 폴이라는 농장주의 아내 제시카를 돌보는 일을 하러 서인도 제도로 떠나면서 시작된다. 제시카는 심한 열병에 걸린 뒤로 살아 있는 시체나 다름없는 상태에 빠져 있다. 그런데 벳시는 그만 폴과 사랑에 빠지고 폴을 위해 제시카를 살려내겠다며 부두교 주술의 힘을 빌리려 한다. 삶과 죽음, 초자연적인 요소와 일상의 삶이 실존적인 갈등을 벌이는 양상을 다룬 이 영화는 투르뇌르적인 모호함의 한 정점을 보여주면서 그것이 어떻게 매력으로 치환될 수 있는지를 증명한다. 벽에 드리운 그림자와 불길한 사운드가 두려움의 분위기를 조성하는 데 얼마나 효과적일 수 있는지를 보여주는 영화이다
