인천상륙작전 직후, 강원도 금산의 어느 마을에 UN군들이 들어와 언례를 겁탈한다. 이 사건으로 마을사람들은 언례를 따돌리고 멸시하지만 남편없이 남의 집살이로 아들 만식을 키우는 언례는 마음대로 죽지도 못한다. 그러던 중 강건너에 미군부대가 주둔하자 그들을 따라온 양색시들이 텍사스촌을 형성하고, 언례는 최후의 수단으로 양색시인 용녀와 순덕을 찾아간다. 서서히 미국문화가 유입되면서 기존의 평화로운 질서가 조금씩 무너지기 시작하고 이를 맞는 마을사람들과 언례일행과의 대립도 첨예해진다. 결국 마을 어린아이들의 죽음으로 이들의 갈등은 봇물 터지듯 터져버린다. 그러나 전쟁이 계속되어 더이상 마을을지키지 못하는 사람들이 하나둘 고향을 등지고 언례와 아들 만식도 모두를 용서하고 이해하며 마을을 떠난다.
