시놉시스
여행 중인 신혼 커플은 작은 마을에서 쉬어가기로 결정한다. 신부는 신비스러운 동굴을 발견하고 그곳에서 ‘죽음’을 만나게 된다. ‘죽음’은 그녀에게 세 명의 목숨을 살린다면 그녀의 남편의 목숨을 살려 주겠다고 하고, 그녀는 그와 함께 여행을 떠나게 된다. 미국 현대미술관(MOMA)이 보유한 35mm 프린트를 기본으로 툴루즈 시네마테크, 뮌헨영화박물관, 러시아 고스필모폰드, 체코영상자료원, 브뤼셀왕립아카이브의 필름을 참고로 디지털 복원되어, 올해 2월 베를린 국제영화제에서 월드 프리미어로 상영되었다. 개봉 당시 ‘충분히 독일적이지 않다는’ 이유로 독일에서는 외면되었으나 해외에서 성공하여 프리츠 랑 감독에게 국제적인 명성을 안겨준 영화이기도 하다. 주한독일문화원의 후원으로 초청된 독일 피아니스트 리하르트 지드호프의 연주로 상영된다. 한 남자(존)가 시체 더미에서 정신을 차리게 된다. 존의 몸은 굳어 움직이기 힘들고 자신의 이름이 뭔지, 어디서 왔는지 등 아무 기억을 하지 못한다. 시체더미에 있는 존이 갖고 있는 것은 총 한자루와 라이터뿐이다. 그때 한 여자가 시체 더미의 구덩이 위에서 밧줄을 내려준다.
존은 밧줄을 타고 위로 올라가 여자를 따라 낫선 집에 들어 가게 된다. 그 집에는 5명의 생존한 사람이 있었고 그 5명의 사람 모두 자신이 어디서 왔는지 기억을 하지 못한다. 그렇게 5명의 사람은 서로를 믿지 못하고 의심을 하며 잃어 버린 기억을 찾으려 애를 쓴다. 일행들은 의문의 괴한으로 부터 공격을 받아 죽거나 다치게 된다.
존과 그 일행은 기억을 찾으려 애를 쓰고 하나 둘 씩 기억을 찾게하는 단서들을 밝견하게 된다. 존이 있는 섬에서 좀비 치료제를 개발하던 중 기억을 잃게 되었다는 알게 된다. 하지만 다가오는 일자까지 치료제를 만들지 못하면 군부대가 투입되어 모든 것을 정리한다는 것을 알게 된 존은 그곳에서의 탈출을 시도하려고 하고 결국 탈출에 성공을 한다.

Silent military propaganda film by Erkki Karu, later followed by the musical revue film Meidän poikamme merellä ("Our Boys at Sea", 1933) and Meidän poikamme ilmassa – me maassa ("Our Boys in the Air – and We on Land", 1934), both of them also directed by Karu. The film comes with a orchestral accompaniment arranged by Raine Ampuja in 2005, based on the original score by Lauri Näre and Emil Kauppi, which in turn was based on traditional Finnish military tunes.
