Doublevision Presents: Cabaret Voltaire (1982)

정체를 알 수 없는 폐쇄된 공간, 왜 이런 폐쇄된 공간에 있는지 갇히게 되었는지도 모르는 여섯 사람이 주인공이다. 경찰관인 쿠엔틴, 수학 전공 학생 리븐, 자폐증이 있는 카잔, 탈옥 전문가 렌, 여의사 할로웨이, 그리고 이 미로와 자신과의 관계를 이야기하지 않으려는 남자 워스, 이들에게 주어진 과제는 어떻게 살아서 이 곳을 빠져 나갈 것인가 하는 것이다. 이 큐브들 안은 무수한 함정과 장치들이 있어서 미로를 빠져 나가려는 사람들을 죽게 한다. 뿐만 아니라 이 큐브의 외형을 설계한 주인공조차 누가 그리고 왜 이런 공간을 만들었는지조차 모른다. 절망한 그들 사이에서 리븐은 큐브 입구마다 새겨진 번호들의 공통점, 곧 솟수의 법칙을 발견한다. 그러나 그들이 솟수의 법칙에 따라 결국 도착한 곳은 그들이 처음으로 만났던 큐브이다. 왜 이런 일이 생겼는가 생각하던 그들은 큐브는 움직이고 있었다는 사실을 그제서야 깨닫는다. 17,576개의 큐브가 서서히 그 모습을 드러낸다. 더 이상 어떻게 해야 할 지 모르는 순간, 자폐증 증상으로 일행을 위험에 빠뜨리던 카잔이 큐브에 감추어진 마지막 단서를 발견한다.

Peter Winter is a young schizophrenic who is desperately trying to get his daughter back from her adoptive family. He attempts to function in a world that, for him, is filled with strange voices, electrical noise, disconcerting images, and jarringly sudden emotional shifts. Donald gets off the bus and heads home hoping to get a good night's sleep. At first, his plans for rest are disturbed by an open window shade which lets light from a flashing sign in. After that problem is dealt with, Donald is kept awake by a persistently dripping faucet. Donald tries to ignore it but after a while, it becomes aggravating to put it mildly. Donald makes several attempts to stop the dripping and finally at least is able to keep it under control via a Rube Goldberg contraption. At this point, Donald receives a call from his water company telling him he hasn't paid his water bill so they're cutting off his water!

Close up we see pistons move up and down or side to side. Pendulums sway, the small parts of machinery move. Gears drive larger wheels. Gears within gears spin. Shafts turn some mechanism that is out of sight. Screws revolve and move other gears; a bit rotates. More subtle mechanisms move other mechanical parts for unknown purposes. Weights rise and fall. The movements, underscored by sound, are rhythmic. Circles, squares, rods, and teeth are in constant and sometimes asymmetrical motion. These human-made mechanical bits seem benign and reassuring.

Mostly dark, rejecting images which are repeated. A stone wall, the chamber of a revolver which is, at first not recognizable, a close-up of a cactus. The duration of the takes emphasises the photographic character of the pictures, simultaneously with a crackling, brutal sound. (Hans Scheugl)

Erkki Kurenniemi was arguably one of the first artists to propose or fantasise about a complete cultural surrender to cyber existence, and his entire career, covering such diverse fields as artificial intelligence, music, engineering, film, dance or rhetorics, testifies to this desire to escape the limits of the human body and transgress into a different dimension, bordering on techno-fetishism. In his 1964 short Electronics in the World of Tomorrow, Kurenniemi presents a slideshow of the most aseptic signs of technological imagination: diagrams, chips, machines, cold surfaces. But footage of human warmth also comes up - mostly in black and white, as if to give humans the status of a memory. Originally silent, the film was in this version endowed with a electronic music piece by Kurenneimi himself: a cold, aggressive soundtrack that could be said to present technology as a potentially menacing affair, although this is a reading that the director would certainly refute.

'People Who Do Noise' is a film about the experimental music of Portland, Oregon. Extensive interviews and intimate performance footage provide an intense portrait of the motivations, emotions, and methods that go into this uncompromising, sometimes brutal musical form. Unwavering in its focus, the film brings to light an art form unfathomable to many, with only the words of the musicians themselves providing any explanation for the pulsating sonic chaos they create. The unflinching cinematic style defies any trend-setting or commercial representation, opting instead for a stark portrayal of a musical underground at its most genuine and vital.
