시놉시스
꼬마였던 조슈아(조셉 크로스 분)에게 가장 좋은 친구는 외할아버지(로버트 로기아 분)였다. 훌륭한 풋볼 선수였던 할아버지는 조슈아에게 공놀이를 가르쳐주셨고, 잠이 안 오거나 몸이 아플 때면 항상 곁에 있어 주셨다. 그렇게 따르고 의지했던 할아버지가 암으로 돌아가셨을 때, 조슈아는 너무나 슬픈 나머지 장례식에도 가지 못했다. 지금도 조슈아는 할아버지의 셔츠를 입고 할아버지의 파이프를 문 채, 할아버지의 흔들의자에 앉아서 예전 일들을 떠올리곤 한다. 한편 현재의 조슈아는 카톨릭 계통의 미션 스쿨에 다니고 있다. 수녀님과 신부님은 모두 좋으신 분들이지만 카톨릭 학교 특유의 엄격하고 답답함은 어쩔 수 없다. 그나마 단짝 친구 데이빗(Dave O'Hara: 티모시 레이스프나이더 분) 덕분에 조슈아는 버틸 수 있었다. 데이빗은 모험가 타입으로 언제나 흥미진진한 작전을 짜고 실행에 옮긴다. 5학년이 되던 해 가을, 데이빗과 함께 복도를 거닐던 조슈아는 창문에서 쏟아져 들어오는 빛을 보면서 하나님에 대한 의문이 솟구쳤다. 그리고 그 해 겨울 내내, 조슈아는 하나님의 존재를 입증해 달라고 기도한다
