위대한 통치자 로만 공작이 죽은 뒤, 귀족들이 권력을 나누어 가져 나라가 흉흉할 때, 공작의 두 아들인 다닐로와 바실코는 아버지의 유산을 되찾기 위해 수도를 홀름으로 새로이 정하고 왕국을 넓힌다. 이때 중앙 유럽에서 세를 넓히고 있던 몽골은 다닐로에게 큰 위협이 되고 다닐로를 눈엣가시로 여기던 귀족들은 몽골과 협약을 맺어 다닐로를 없애버리려는 계획을 세운다. 대대적인 군사를 이끌고 몽골과 전쟁을 치른 다닐로는 계속되는 몽골과 귀족의 위협에 새로운 전쟁을 치르려 하는데...

대대로 카르파티아 산맥에서 부락을 이루고 살아가던 투클리아 마을. 막심와 아이반 형제는 사냥을 하며 평화로운 일상을 보낸다. 그러던 어느날 투가르 볼크라는 마을의 통치권을 주장하는 인물이 등장하며 마을은 혼란에 빠지게 된다.

고등학교에 재학 중인 비튜(다닐 카멘스키)는 개기일식이 있던 날, 캠핑을 떠났다가 이공간으로 빠져들고 만다. 도착한 세계는 1000년 전 어느 지방이었고, 도착하자 마자 비튜는 쿠만족과 안다크(에르잔 누림베트)에게 쫓김을 받는다. 가까스로 올레스코(로만 러스키)에 의해 구출되는 비튜지만, 이번에는 낯선 그의 행색에 첩자로 오인을 받는다. 우여곡절 끝에 자신이 이공간에 빠지게 된 원인을 알게되는 비튜. 산 위에 있는 마구스로부터 ‘페룬돌’을 찾으면 원래 있던 공간으로 돌아갈 수 있다는 것을 알게된다. 하지만 페룬돌은 쿠만족도 찾고 있던 물건이었고, 비튜가 페룬돌의 비밀을 알고 있다는 것을 알게 된 안다크는 비튜를 노리게 된다.

1917년 러시아 제국의 붕괴로 우크라이나는 독립 공화국을 설립한다. 하지만 이듬해인 1918년, 레닌이 이끄는 볼셰비키당의 붉은 군대는 우크라이나의 수도인 키예프를 차지하기 위해 전쟁을 선포한다. 이에 대항하기 위해 우크라이나는 학군단을 모집하고, 평범한 대학생이던 안드리, 발레리, 그레고리는 학도병에 자원한다. 고작 300여 명에 불과한 학도병들은 우크라이나의 자유와 독립을 지키기 위해 이들은 키예프에 있는 크루티 역에서 무라뵤프가 이끄는 4천 여명의 군사와 목숨을 걸고 맞서 싸운다.
