시놉시스
영화는 노동자인 프레드와 그의 부인 에밀리가 그들이 살아있는 동안 평생 뭐든지 할 수 있는 거대한 돈을 그들에게 남기고 죽은 친척의 편지를 받는 것으로부터 시작된다. 단조롭고 지루한 일상에 염증을 느끼고 있던 두 사람은 크게 기뻐하며 크루즈 세계일주를 하기로 한다. 그러나 세계 여행길에 오르면서부터 이들의 관계는 서서히 금이 가기 시작하고, 두 사람은 작은 일탈에 빠져든다. 에밀리는 갑부 사령관인 고든과 사랑의 감정을 나누고, 프레드는 공주행세를 하는 사기꾼 여자에게 빠져들게 된다. 결국 프레드는 그의 돈 모두를 사기로 날려버리고, 비참해진 두 사람은 허름한 화물선을 타고 집으로 돌아오던 중에 빗나간 사랑처럼 위험하게 배가 난파를 당하게 된다. 가까스로 중국인들에 의해 구출되어 초라한 시 외곽 지역의 셋방으로 돌아온 두 사람은 한층 성숙해져 있는 자신들을 발견하게 된다.
