족장 (1921)

바다 한가운데서 표류하고 있는 어느 조그만 보트. 두 여자와 한 남자가 타고 있다. 그들은 바로 전의 일을 회상한다. 그중 한 여자(올라 브레누)는 교도소장의 도움으로 탈출한 죄수다. 탈출은 했지만 뉴타운에서 재봉사로서의 단순한 삶은 더 이상 살고 싶지 않을 만큼 불행만 기다리고 있을 뿐이다. 다른 한 여자(타티아나 레이)는 무성영화의 피아니스트 사내(브루터스 페드레이라)와 결혼했다. 그는 술주정뱅이로 지방의 작은 극장에서 ‘찰리 채플린’의 보조를 하며 생계를 이어가고 있다. 그리고 남자(라울 슈누어)는 한 여자와 불륜관계에 있는 홀아비다. 어느날 부인의 무덤에 가는 길에 그녀의 남편과 마주쳤다. 그녀의 남편은 그녀가 나병(한센병)에 걸렸다고 말했다. 어쩔 수 없이 남자는 여자를 보낼 수 밖에 없었다. 이렇게 이들 셋은 더 이상 살고자 하는 욕망이나 힘은 남아 있지 않고 삶의 한계에 와 있다.

Finally, they reach Mars and discover that the planet is inhabited by people who have reached a higher stage of development, free of diseases, sorrow, violence, sexual urges, and the fear of death. Avanti falls in love with Marya, daughter of the Prince of Wisdom, the head of the Martians. Marya shares his feelings and decides to return with him in order to bring the wisdom of the Martians to the backward Earthlings. (stumfilm.dk)

피아니스트 파울 올락은 끔찍한 열차 사고로 양손을 잃는다. 다행히 파울은 손 이식 수술을 받지만 손의 원래 주인이 최근 사형당한 살인자라는 사실을 알게 된다. 파울은 살인자의 악한 마음이 자신에게 영향을 미친다는 강박에 시달린다. 독일 표현주의의 대표작 을 연출했던 로베르트 비네의 의학 SF. 당대 심리학의 중요한 문제였던 ‘몸과 마음은 하나인가’라는 질문을 던지는 동시에 과학 기술의 가능성과 위험성을 함께 고민하는 작품. 2013년에 새롭게 복원된 버전으로 상영한다. 런던에서 금발 미녀를 대상으로 한 연쇄살인사건이 일어난다. 그 무렵 번팅 부부의 집에 낯선 사나이가 방을 얻는다. 번팅 부부의 딸 데이지는 경찰관인 남자친구 조에게 사나이를 조사해볼 것을 제안한다. 안개 낀 밤만 되면 외출을 하고 금발여인의 초상화에 신경질적인 반응을 보이는 등 여러 가지로 의심스러운 행동을 하는 사나이의 뒤를 캐던 조는 그를 연쇄살인의 범인으로 지목한다. 그러나 진짜 범인이 잡히면서 사나이는 누명을 벗고 데이지는 그에 대한 자신의 사랑을 확인한다.

버스터 키튼, 찰리 채플린과 더불어 무성 코미디영화의 '3대 천재'로 불리우는 해럴드 로이드의 출연작. 형제 중 가장 어리고, 유약하며 겁많은 마마보이이였던 해럴드는 아름다운 여인 마리를 사랑하게 되면서 자신의 한계를 극복하고 자신감 넘치는 보통 사람으로 변화해 간다.
