켄터키주 작은 광산촌에서 광부의 딸로 태어난 로레타(Loretta Lynn: 시시 스펙 분)는 14살 때 조금은 불량스럽지만 그런 대로 활동적인 청년 둘리틀(Doolittle "Mooney" Lynn: 토미 리 존스 분)를 만나 갑자기 결혼을 하게 된다. 어린 나이의 신부, 10살이상 차이가 나는 남편과의 결혼 생활은 주위의 예상대로 순탄하지 못해 헤어지고 또 만나고 하는 생활을 반복하게 된다. 하지만 그것도 잠시 두 사람 사이에 아이들이 생기면서 평범한 부부가 된 로레타와 둘리틀은 켄터키를 떠나 다른 지방에 정착 해서 그럭 저럭 살아간다. 그러던 중 로레타의 생일날 남편 둘리틀이 전당포에서 중고 기타를 생일 선물로 로레타에게 사다 주게 되고 그 기타를 연주하던 로레타는 자신에게 숨은 재능, 즉 노래 솜씨가 있다는 사실을 알게 된다. 남편 둘리틀의 격려 속에 마을회관 무대에 오른 로레타는 멋진 노래를 선보이고 자작곡 "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl"을 만든 로레타는 남편 둘리틀과 함께 미국 남부를 돌면서 가수로서 데뷔하려 한다. 계속되는 여행과 방송국 순방을 통해 어럽게 가요계의 문을 두드리던 두사람, 이들의 노력은 헛되지 않아 드디어 로레타의 노래가 인기 차트에 오르게 된다. 로레타는 스타의 길을 향해 한 걸음 한걸음 올라가고, 마침내 칸츄리 가수들이 꿈에 그리는 무대 그랜드 올 오프리 무대에까지 서게 된다. 그러나.

런던 1893년. 집필가, 발명자, 미래학자로서 활약 중인 젊은 H.G.웰즈(H. G. Wells: 말콤 맥도웰 분)가 신발명의 타임머신을 친구들에게 빼앗긴다. 그 중에는 챤스에 강한 파트너인 스티븐슨 의사가 가세하고 있다. 누구도 타임머신의 성능을 믿지못하고 기계를 바라보고 있지만 가정부가 경관의 방문을 알려왔다. 근처에서 한 창녀가 시체로 발견이 되고 이로 인해 한집 한집 탐문수사를 펴고 있었다. 그러나 범인은 미래로 도망가고 스티븐슨의 검진 가방에 피가 묻어 있어 경찰들은 그를 범인으로 판단하고, 이를 피하기 위해 스티븐슨은 타임머신으로 미래로 도망간다. 이곳은 1979년 샌프란시스코, 스티븐슨은 과거와 미래의 사이에서 방황하게 된다.

건축사 뉴턴 데이비스(스티브 마틴 분)는 고향의 소꿉 친구 베키(다나 딜레이니 분)에게 아름다운 집을 지어 결혼 신청을 하지만 거절당한다. 그는 부다페스트라는 카페에서 좀 묘한 성격의 그웬(골디 혼 분)을 만나게 된다. 처음 만난 날 깊은 관계를 갖게 된 그웬은 데이비스가 그린 그림의 집을 찾아 그의 고향으로 간다. 그런데 얼떨결에 자기가 데이비스의 아내라고 말해 버린다. 결국 데이비스의 부모님까지 만난 그녀는 마을에서 인정받게 된다. 그때 집을 팔기 위해 돌아온 데이비스는 그간의 사정을 알게 되면서 그 일을 계기로 베키의 마음을 돌려 결혼하기 위해 그웬과 꾀를 낸다. 즉, 원만치 않은 부부관계를 데이비스는 최선을 다해 구해 보려는 척해서 베키의 동정을 얻으려는 작전이다. 그러나, 시간이 경과하면서 데이비스의 마음은 점점 그웬에게 기울고, 그녀에게 사랑을 고백하고 결혼 신청을 한다.
