"조국의 부름"에 의무로 응하긴 했으나, 군인 노릇도 싫고 죽기는 더 싫다. 왜 싸워야 하는지, 왜 목숨을 걸어야 하는지도 분명치 않다. 훈련은 받았지만 작전에 임해서는 두렵기만 한 존재이다. 기존의 많은 이차대전 영화와는 분위기가 많이 다르다. 그 쓸쓸하고 허무한 느낌이 영화의 백미이다. 아름다운 흑백화면이 매우 처연합니다. 자료화면과 실제 영화 화면을 적절하게 섞어서 이질감이 전혀 느껴지지 않는다.
