히말라야 산맥 티베트와 네팔의 경계지역 돌포마을 사람들은 자기들이 생산한 소금을 곡식과 맞바꾸기 위해 카라반을 구성해 거의 한 달을 걸어 곡창지대로 가야만 한다. 카라반은 험난한 산길을 걷고 또 걷는 중에 폭풍을 만나고 눈보라를 헤쳐나가야만 하는데, 길이 험한만큼 지도자의 역할이 클 수밖에 없다. 대를 이어 족장을 맡아온 틴레 집안의 젊은 아들 락파가 카라반에서 사고로 죽자, 그의 늙은 아버지 틴레는 족장 자리를 탐낸 마을 젊은이 칼마가 아들을 죽게 한 것이라고 의심하여 그를 견제하려 한다. 전통적으로 카라반의 출발일은 동네 원로들이 별자리 점을 쳐서 결정해 왔지만, 이를 별로 신뢰하지 않는 신세대 청년 칼마가 마을의 젊은사람들을 설득해 지정된 날짜에 앞서 카라반을 출발시키자, 틴레는 칼마를 더욱 의심하면서 예전에 족장이었던 자신의 능력을 보여주기 위해 마을의 남은 노인들로 꾸린 소규모 카라반을 이끌고 4일 뒤에 출발, 20여일의 목숨을 건 위험한 강행군 끝에 칼마를 따라잡는데 성공하지만...
