스스로에게 레이디 버드라는 이름을 지어준 크리스틴은 엄마가 자신을 레이디 버드로 부르지 않는 것이 불만이다. 게다가 뉴욕 소재의 대학에 진학하고 싶다고 하자 시립대에나 진학하라는 말에 발끈한다. 말로는 엄마를 설득할 수 없을 것 같자 레이디 버드는 달리는 차 안에서 망설임 없이 뛰어내린다. 새크라멘토의 가톨릭 고등학교 졸업반인 레이디 버드는 어떻게든 고리타분한 새크라멘토를 벗어나고 싶어 한다. 우정도 사랑도 엄마와의 관계도 뜻대로 되지 않는 지금 여기에서의 시간에서 벗어나기 위해서라도 레이디 버드에게 뉴욕행은 간절하다.

On the Oaxacan coast of Mexico, rumblings of previous times are never far from the surface.
